Is it just me???

Today while I was at work, I downloaded a personal finance book to my Kindle called "How to live Big on Small budget". As soon as I started reading it, I had to put it up! Is it just me or are most of the personal finance books out there made for people who have money, but just don't know how to manage it??? I mean really, if I read one more book that tells me "Sell that second home", "Drive just one car", "Sell some stock", I'm going to scream! Hey guy who wrote this book clearly made for someone who makes 100k and not 29k, "I don't have that second home, hell I don't have a first home!" ,"I don't have a second car and had I not got current I would be out of my first car", "What are these stocks you speak of???"

I would just love a book that is made for people in my money situation. For the lower middle class person…..because according to an article on Yahoo, that's what I am. I want a book that is written by a person, who was actually in debt and go out, not by some person who never was and just studied numbers in school, read other books, tweaked here and there and then put out a book.

Now I'm not saying these books aren't helpful. For some people, these books are made just for you and for me personally I do find tips and tricks that I can use in my situation, but it would be nice to have a book that I can completely relate to. I just have yet to find that book.

I’m not going to count this book out, I just started it and maybe I will be surprised. I will be sure to report back and let you know how I liked or didn’t like the book!

    Look for The Complete Tightwad Gazette by Amy Dacyczyn. Your library probably carries it. The title kind of fools you. It's more about frugality and very careful money management than being a tightwad. It's truly the leader in down to earth, "real people" ideas. Some ideas are extreme, some are very easily accomplished, some are in the middle. There's something in it for everyone.

    I know what you mean. Kind of. That's like all the articles I read on how to save "X" amount of dollars in "X" amount of months. All the things they suggest you eliminate, I don't do to begin with. Very frusturating. How about some REAL financial advice?

    My best suggestion is a book by Mary Hunt, titled Cheapskate Monthly Money Makeover. Easy read. Great suggestions for paying down debt. Mary Hunt has many other titles. She definitely won't tell you to sell your second home. You can buy it used for $.01 plus shipping on Amazon.com. Or better yet, save your money and borrow it from the library like the rest of us thrifty people!!

    I agree with LR, that The Tightwad Gazette has good thrifty ideas.

    I heartily agree! So many "financial" books are really just about how not to be utterly stupid with your big ole whoppin' income. I don't need that kind of advice!

    The books mentioned above are great...I would also check out Your Money or Your Life by Vicki Robbin. It offers a great perspective for calculating what all your stuff is really costing you.

    Mary Hunt's books are great! They are a large part of what got me started back on the right path 11 years ago ...

    People who have (and follow) sound financial principles don't need too many books to keep them on track, but there is a dearth of that knowledge in general society. They don't even have personal finance classes in high schools any more, lots of places. This leads to a huge market for books and other services to make up for that lack, and offer some insurance for what people need to keep themselves afloat!
